Dodge City is famous in American Culture for its history as a frontier town of the Old West. Originally a stop on the Sante Fe Trail, Dodge City was later located on the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway. Today, four U.S. Highways meet in Dodge City: U.S. Route 50, U.S. Route 56, U.S. Route 283, and U.S. Route 400. History abounds in the area. Several historical sites, museums and landmarks dedicated to Dodge City’s Old West heritage are located in, and around, the city. The Boot Hill Museum contains a partial reconstruction of downtown Dodge City as it existed in 1876. Located just nine miles west of the city are preserved wagon tracks from a section of the Sante Fe Trail known as the Sante Fe Trail Remains. Another nod to Dodge City’s past is a life-sized bronze statue of famous Dodge City lawman, Wyatt Earp. Cargill Meat Solutions and National Beef both operate facilities in the city. With a population of roughly 30,000 people, Dodge City’s primary enterprise is meat packing. A number of farm implement manufacturers also reside in Dodge City, making it a supply center for area agriculture. Among Dodge City’s attractions is a zoo located in Wright Park, the largest of 21 parks spread throughout the city.
